High School "Leadership Accelerator"

OCIC is launched the first High School "Leadership Accelerator" Internship Pilot Program. If you are interested in participating, please come back next year as our application is currently closed. ➡️ application form ⬅️.

This unpaid summer internship is tailor-made for high school students who want to gain hands-on work experience, develop their leadership skills, and gain insight into entrepreneurship in Oakland Chinatown with AI and digital marketing industry trends.

The program will involve rotations among some fantastic agencies including the Oakland Mayor's Office, Oakland Police Department, Alameda County Sheriff's Office, with us OCIC, the Community Benefit District to lead the community efforts. The focus will be on providing support to AAPI businesses in their native language.

We can't wait to see the positive impact it will have on the community and the lives of the students involved! If you are not ready for our program this year, please subscribe to our newsletter for the internship update!

Our patrol teams are on duty all night and into the early morning keeping our community safe. This is a perfect time to visit late night restaurants, such as Lounge Chinatown, One Milk Tea, New Gold Medal Restaurant and Shooting Star. Some of the businesses open for your early morning meals are Big Dish, Fortune, Ruby King, and Wonder Food Bakeries.

OCIC and Family Bridges

OCIC has contracted with Family Bridges to provide a number of services for our business district to create a safe and welcoming environment. Family Bridges will be working to enhance relationships between the neighborhood’s merchants, workers and residents. They will work to mitigate and de-escalate tense situations, provide bystander assistance, and increase awareness by reporting incidents of hate and crime. They will be addressing issues of cleanliness through a program of power washing and graffiti abatement, as well as garbage removal which is not addressed by the city’s waste management.

As an organization, Family Bridges has been part of Oakland Chinatown for more than five decades. Family Bridges offers a broad range of services to support the Asian community. You may find Family Bridges ambassadors working in the community typically Monday through Friday from 5AM to 4PM and on Saturdays from 10AM to 2PM. They can be reached at (510) 250-2038.

City of Oakland Improvement Grants

City of Oakland Facade and Tenant Improvement Program

UPDATE: The deadline for application to the program ended January 31, 2023.

OCIC encourages all business owners to explore this new grant program from the City of Oakland. These grants provide up to $75,000 (up to $30,000 for exterior and up to $45,000 for interior) to improve the interior and exterior of your business. The grants can be used to upgrade safety and ADA accessibility, as well as painting, signage, lighting and flooring. There are additional $2,500 grants to repair windows due to vandalism. 2023 Lunar New Year Parade

OCIC + Toishan Benevolent Association sponsored the 2023 Lunar New Year Parade on January 29, 2023.

The Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council in conjunction with the Toishan Benevolent Association organized the 2023 Oakland Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade. With the signing of Assembly Bill No. 2596, the Lunar New Year became an official holiday in California, and we were compelled to honor that action with this celebration! This was the first parade in Oakland's Chinatown in 50 years.

We had 62 teams register for the parade, with almost a 1,000 people. We had a diverse range of participants. In addition to Chinese Americans, there were also Vietnamese Americans, Hmong Americans, Indian Americans, African Americans, native Americans, LGBTQ and Latino Americans.

We were honored to have Evan Low, the State Assemblymember who sponsored the bill, join us. Some of our supporters were Alameda County Supervisor Lena Tam, Mayor Sheng Thao, Oakland Council members Nikki Fortunato Bas and Janani Ramachandran and the new Sheriff of Alameda County, Yesenia Sanchez.

The event was supported by many great volunteers and community organizations. It was a great celebration, and we're already strategizing on how to make it bigger and better next year. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it such a success!

Fundraiser for Asian driver Patrick Fung killed in East Oakland

We are fundraising to support the family and loved ones of Patrick Fung, who was tragically shot and killed in a senseless act of violence on Sunday, July 17th on his way to work. This GoFundme is authorized by his family.

He was on his way to work when 2 unidentified suspects shot and killed Patrick Fung. By the time officers arrived, he was already gone.

Patrick Fung was a hard-working immigrant from Hong Kong. He worked two jobs as a warehouse delivery man and drove Uber to support his parents, often working 16-18 hours a day. His dream was to make enough money to care for his parents, get married and start a family with his girlfriend. He was the sole breadwinner of his family. Please donate help the support Patrick's family. His older brother, Ivan Fung, will be handed all of the funds to disperse amongst Patrick's loved ones.

Thank you for attending OCIC Chinatown street festival on July 30, 2022. Your attendance made our inaugural event that much more special and please know that without your unwavering support, this would not have been possible.

Our OCIC Summer Street Festival was a smashing success! Residents and merchants came up to thank us for putting together an event for the history books. All in all, over 70 booths and a main stage of non stop performances kept thousands of visitors occupied and entertained for eight hours. One elderly lady commented "In all the years that Chinatown has had street festivals, this was the one I enjoyed the most".

Comments like that will only encourage us to strive for a performance next year.As you are aware, the crimes in and around our neighborhood started in the beginning of the covid pandemic and it just got worse over time. It has been 2 1/2 years since our residents were able to walk the streets of Chinatown without feeling scared and intimidated. What hurts me the most is knowing our residents are afraid to go outside their own home and merchants are forced to closed their shops early. This cannot be the Chinatown that we want. OCIC's goal is to bring back the heyday of Chinatown from the past.

We are tasked to help revitalized Oakland Chinatown and this Summerfest is only the beginning. Our council has a few major projects in the works, including the "Ambassador Program" to help keep our community safe and clean. There are also discussions on collaboration between our volunteer patrol teams and Bart/OPD on conflict resolution training. Our Identity Committee is also considering beautification projects like planting vibrant and colorful flowers, trees, benches, murals, and even a welcome to Chinatown gate . I encourage the public and the community to join our monthly board meetings and share ideas on how they want to see Chinatown improve.

With your help and continued support, I know we can get there.
